| Mathew Coubrough and Elizabeth
Brown Line
Matt Coubrough was the only son of James Coubrough and
Annie MacDonald. While there is some discussion as to whether he was born
in Halifax, Nova Scotia or St. John, New Brunswick (he was baptised in the
latter), it is quite certain that he was the first known person of his
name to be born in what is now Canada. In 1858, at the age of four years,
he moved with his parents and younger sister, Flora Jane, to Dawn
Township, Upper Canada (now Ontario), where he married and raised his own
family. In 1905, at the age of 51, he and some of his older sons
"went West" and took homesteads in southern Saskatchewan, his
wife and younger children following in 1909.
The pictures in this section are his - and my - family.
Matt and Liz were my grandfather's parents.
